Sustainability at Groz-Beckert – Preserving Diversity

02.02.2011

Albstadt: Groz-Beckert has a quality management system certified to DIN EN ISO 9001, an environmental management system certified to DIN EN ISO 14 001, and its work and health protection management system has been certified to BS OHSAS 18001. The company is making a major and many-faceted contribution with regard to sustainability – a contribution in which around 6,500 employees are playing a central role.

Groz-Beckert principally regards the environmentally compatible and safe manufacture of its products as a prerequisite for healthy growth. The objectives are to conserve resources, to maintain an intact environment for present as well as future generations, and to preserve the diversity of flora and fauna. The sustainability principles also emphasise the importance of partnership where employee relations are concerned.

Impressive product features

At Groz-Beckert, preservation of resources begins as early as the product development stage. In accordance with the high standards of a responsible company, diverse details are taken into account. The result: products from Groz-Beckert and their packaging are environmentally-friendly, dispensing with any materials that could adversely affect the health of machine operators or pollute the environment. They are recyclable or environmentally neutral, and contain no dangerous substances as listed by the German Hazardous Substances Ordinance. Moreover the entire portfolio conforms to RoHs (EC guideline 2002/95/EG governing the limitation on the use of certain hazardous substances) and REACH (EC guideline 1907/2006 governing the registration, evaluation, authorisation and limitation of certain chemical substances).

KYOCERA Environment Prize for the litespeed® needle

The company supplies over 70,000 product types and system components for the most diverse textile production methods. Where sustainability is concerned, the litespeed® needle for high-speed circular knitting machines is a shining example. It proves how even a miniaturised precision tool can make a tangible difference to the environment – and how ecological and economic benefits can synergise effectively. With its special needle geometry, the litespeed® needle not only increases productivity but also lowers machine temperatures, as well as reducing oil and energy consumption. Sample calculations made on the basis of a needle set of 3,000 needles show that an annual reduction in CO2 of over 1.4 t was achieved by the litespeed® needle in China alone, while for India the figure was over 2.4 t. These figures also impressed the general public – which is why, on April 29, 2010, Groz-Beckert was awarded the KYOCERA Environment Prize.

Preserving resources throughout the company

At Groz-Beckert, the environment means far more than just ecologically superior products. Processes within the company are also given the highest priority with regard to ecology. A steady reduction in consumption throughout the organisation reflects this consciously ecological approach. For example, Groz-Beckert is continually reducing solvent consumption during degreasing, steadily lowering its hydrocarbon emissions and also minimising its waste water for industrial cleaning. The company is also continuously monitoring and optimising its water consumption as well as reducing the use of auxiliary and operational materials. This progressive environmental policy also extends to architecture and construction activities. The new Technology and Development Centre (TEZ), opened in July 2010 at the company's headquarters in Albstadt, exceeds in many respects the already strict energy-saving demands stipulated by law. In addition, an advanced laboratory has been integrated into the TEZ offering environmental analysis, lubricant analysis and water/wastewater analysis.

Detailed information on all measures, activities and results where sustainability is concerned is documented annually by Groz-Beckert in the so-called "ARGUS" report. ARGUS deals with corporate themes such as work safety, risk management, health promotion, company safety and know-how protection. The company expressly intends to continue with its pioneering role in this sector, too, fully establishing it for the future – for a world that will still give us pleasure many years from now and continue to delight us with its diversity.
