Diagnosis: Upward trends

Since 1950, the world's population has very nearly tripled in size: almost seven billion people live on our planet today. With an average growth-rate forecast of one percent, that figure will be well above eight billion by the year 2030. Parallel to this the average age, currently 29, will increase to 34. These developments, combined with purchasing power that is steadily growing worldwide, are giving medical technology enormous potential on the one hand while confronting it with major challenges on the other. According to projections, the worldwide market volume of the medical technology sector as a whole will have risen to more than USD 20 billion by the year 2030. The textile sector will only be able to participate in this growth by means of strategic developments and solutions, combined with rapid time-to-market.

Medication: textile innovation

It is hardly surprising that textiles are already being used in numerous applications in the medical and hygiene sectors. Operating gowns, doctor's bags and treatment tables all spring to mind here. The situation is different where telemedicine, textile-integrated monitoring systems or textile implants are concerned. Research in these sectors is still very recent, and leading to new technological achievements with every year that goes by. Textiles for innovative wound treatment as well as sterile barrier textiles are also providing scope for new ideas. But what kind of solutions are these? What specific products are textile producers and medical technology providers working on? And how can our company play a part in it all? Find out all about it in this special edition on "Medicine and Hygiene"!
